This critical facility/building is on Brookhaven National Laboratory grounds in Upton, NY. The Core Facility Revitalization (CFR) project was an approximately 55,000-square-foot renovation/repurpose of the National Synchrotron Light Source I (Building 725) into a Data and Advanced Computing Center to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s five other National Laboratory’s.
The Data Center was in the central part of the building open to the roof structure above. The remaining adjacent areas/levels of the building consisted of network rooms, tape library, support laboratories, office, lounges areas, etc. The project in addition required removal and replacement of all exterior clerestory windows, modifications to façade elements, and a complete roof removal and replacement.
Work on this project included new modern and reliable power and cooling infrastructure which was provided with capabilities for expansion and incremental growth. Robust backup capabilities were provided for both power and cooling. The data rooms are cooled via new chillers and cooling towers, providing chilled water directly to network racks through piping below a raised floor system, with individual branches and connections for future rack expansion. Strategies were incorporated that provide for efficient data center configurations and accommodate BNL’s needs for future flexibility and expansion.
A new Unistrut System was also installed throughout the main Date Center to support multiple levels of cable tray and lighting for the data rack rooms. A separate HCSG facility and generator yard includes 2 generators and switchgear, with the capacity to add an additional section of HVSG and up to 8 generators, for backup power serving the entire CFR facility.
