At the corner of Northern Boulevard and 39th Avenue in Long Island City, NY, sits a new structural steel-framed,12-story, 170,000-square-foot climate-controlled storage facility. EW Howell Construction Group’s work involved extensive site surveying and pile testing to construct the new vertical building sandwiched between two existing Public Storage facilities. The new building envelope consisted of prefabricated horizontal insulated metal panels and storefront systems.
Due to the constraints of a tight site adjacent to a major highway, logistics planning was a key to success. This included coordinating a 30,000-gallon cast-in-place water storage tank, crane placement, on-site plant management, storage, scaffolding, and materials handling. Preplanning and coordination allowed us to maintain a schedule, reduce the risk of added costs, provide a safe site environment for all, and ensure neighbors did not experience unnecessary disruptions.
The new Public Storage facility in Long Island City features an office/retail area, display space, and over 1,000 individual storage units. Its grand opening was held in September 2024.
