Stony Brook Hospital Modernization Phase 2

Stony Brook Hospital Modernization

PROJECT DETAILS

The Stony Brook Hospital Major Modernization Project Phase II, which EW Howell Construction Group began in the fall of 2009, consisted of a multi-phased alteration and renovation project of approximately 91,000 square feet located on existing floors 4, 5, and 6 (roof) of the Stony Brook University Medical Center.

The new work on level 4 expanded the Emergency Department, Critical Decision Unit (CDU), Post Anesthesia Care Unit, and Holding and Stage II Recovery. On level 5, the new work provided expansion for Labor and Delivery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, hospital main entrance/lobby, registration and admitting and supporting services areas.

North and east exterior walls on levels 4 and 5 were renovated with new curtainwall and plaster finishes. On level 6 (the roof), 7 clerestory structures will be built in order to supply natural light to the NICU directly below.

Intensive infection control and interim safety measures added a new dimension to the obstacles inherent to working in an occupied space.

Construction was completed while the hospital was fully occupied and operational.
