Brookhaven National Laboratory, Research Support Building (RSB)
In October 2006, EW Howell Construction Group completed the Research Support Building (RSB) at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY. This two-story building occupies 64,054 square feet and consolidates frequently visited administrative and support functions in a single location. Ehasz Giacalone Architects P.C. designed the building which features a glass atrium-style lobby connecting two wings of offices covered by a metal panel façade.
The RSB office building was part of BNL’s plans for the future expansion of BNL. The RSB was extremely successful for both BNL and EW Howell. The project was completed on time and within budget while maintaining high construction quality and safety standards. The safety standards established at BNL in partnership with EW Howell and BNL has been acknowledged as a gold standard in the construction industry.
The RSB building 400 was the beginning of EW Howell’s and BNL’s construction venture and relationship at Brookhaven Haven National Laboratory that continues today.

The Research Support Building (RSB) has a LEED Silver certification and is Brookhaven Lab’s first LEED project. The project features a high-performance insulation system, facilities for people who commute by bike, preservation of open spaces, and subdued outdoor lighting which meets the needs of the occupants and does not produce unnecessary light pollution.
