This renovation and expansion project for New York Institute for Special Education (NYISE) was an extremely tight fast track schedule. The school serves blind, visually impaired, emotionally disabled and, learning disabled students. Three separate buildings were involved in this complex project: the renovation of two existing buildings and the construction of a third. These buildings include Schermerhorn Hall, Van Cleve Hall, and a New Dormitory.
Schermerhorn Hall
Schermerhorn Hall was the most aggressive phase of the NYISE project. Classrooms were upgraded as well as existing bathroom and shower facilities. The auditorium was converted into the new library, and the old library was converted into a new auditorium. A new masonry gymnasium addition was constructed at one end of Schermerhorn Hall and included a new running track.
Van Cleve Hall
Renovations to the 2-story Van Cleve Hall building encompass upgrades to existing bathrooms, classrooms and the installation of a new elevator.
New Dormitory
A new block and plank dormitory was constructed to accommodate approximately 36 students who reside at the institute during the school week.
All phases of this ambitious project were completed within a year.
