Stony Brook University Southampton Library
PROJECT DETAILS
In August 2009, EW Howell Construction Group completed construction of the SUNY Stony Brook Southampton Library. This project included a 23,000-square-foot renovation of the library at the Southampton campus of SUNY Stony Brook. EW Howell originally started the construction for Long Island University when it owned the Southampton campus. Since then, it has been purchased by Stony Brook.
Designed by Mitchell | Giurgola Architects, the 2-story Stony Brook University Southampton Library building is energy efficient and includes individual study space, group meeting rooms for students and faculty, and a café. The exterior of the building features a combination of brick, cedar and glass.
As a LEED Gold building, the library uses elements including:
- A geothermal piping system
- Stormwater collection
- Bamboo and metal pan ceiling, reducing VOCs
- Cellulose-reinforced concrete, offering better durability
- FSC-certified woods
LEED GOLD
The Southampton Library project is LEED Gold certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and includes the use of environmentally sustainable building materials and innovative construction strategies that conserve energy use and reduce the library’s operational costs.
